Special thanks Jiri Kremser, Red Hat, for his work on the Google Summer of Code project, Jerry Pan, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, for contributing the hints provider support and Ben Armintor, Columbia University, for his heroic efforts on further Spring-ifying Fedora. Release notes: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/FEDORA36/Release+Notes Download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/fedora-commons/files/fedora/3.6/fcrepo-installer-3.6.jar/download The following features and changes in Fedora's flexible and extensible repository software are part of Fedora 3.6 release improvements. ? *Updated Web Services framework.* Fedora 3.6 incorporates work from the Google Summer of Code project to move from the aging Axis 1.3 library to Apache CXF. This allows Fedora to support Message Transmission Optimization Mechanism (MTOM), which provides a 33% size efficiency over Base64 encoded transmission making it easier to add content. ? *Support for lowlevel storage metadata.* Fedora now includes a hints provider API, allowing implementations to pass such metadata as mimetype or collection membership to be passed to the low-level storage module. This would allow, for example, the low-level storage module to make decisions about where objects or datastreams are stored based on the provided metadata. ? *Expanded Spring-based configuration.* Support for Spring configuration of Fedora has been expanded to include the Server module, SOAP and REST APIs. ? *Oracle support for MPTStore*. Fedora includes the latest Trippi and MPTStore libraries, adding support for Oracle as the backing database for MPTStore. ? *REST API support for the getDatastreams method.* The REST API now supports the API-M getDatastreams method. All of the SOAP API-M methods are now supported by Fedora's REST API. ? *Experimental support for upstream authentication.* Fedora includes a new upstream servlet filter which allows for integration with external authentication systems (e.g. single-sign-on services). ? *Updated REST API Validation failure response codes.* If a REST API management operation results in a validation failure (e.g. ingest FOXML validation, validation failure via the DOObjectValidator module) the HTTP response code is now 400. Previously Fedora reported a generic Server Failure 500 response code. The response body indicates the nature of the validation error. ? *Legacy authentication module End of Life. *The legacy authentication module, deprecated since Fedora 3.4, will be phased out in the next Fedora release. ? *Deprecation of fcrepo-client-messaging library.* The fcrepo-client-messaging library has been deprecated in favor of the fedora-client messaging library. You are encouraged to download this new release, give it a spin and send us your comments and feedback via the mailing lists, and of course please let us know of any problems you discover. *About DuraSpace* DuraSpace is an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded in 2009 when the Fedora Commons organization and the DSpace Foundation, two of the largest providers of open source repository software, joined to pursue a common mission to preserve our shared scholarly, scientific and cultural record. Chief motivators include the proliferation of digital data and a growing interest in research data and supplemental information as a part of the framework for scholarly communication. Key objectives include not only preservation of scientific research data, but making data accessible to verify research findings and support the reuse and repurposing of data. Metadata figures prominently in these undertakings, and is critical for the success of any data repositories or archiving initiative, hence increased attention to metadata for scientific data -- specifically for metadata standards development and interoperability, data curation and metadata generation processes, data identifiers, name authority control (for scientists), Linked Data, ontology and vocabulary work, and data citation standards. This NISO/DCMI webinar will provide a historical perspective and an overview of current metadata practices for managing scientific data, with examples drawn from operational repositories and community-driven data science initiatives. It will discuss challenges and potential solutions for metadata generation, identifiers, name authority control, Linked Data, and data citation. SPEAKERS Jane Greenberg, professor at the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and director of the SILS Metadata Research Center, is well known for research and writing on topics ranging from automatic metadata creation to metadata best practices, ontology research, Semantic Web, data repositories, thesauri, and scientific data curation. She has served as Principal Investigator or partner on a number of grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Health, and actively participates in organizations such as the American Library Association, American Society for Information Science and Technology, and the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. Jane is the recipient of the 2012 Margaret Mann Citation from the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS). Thomas Baker, Chief Information Officer of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, has recently co-chaired the W3C Semantic Web Deployment Working Group and the W3C Incubator Group on Library Linked Data. REGISTRATION Registration is per site (access for one computer) and closes at 12:00 pm Eastern on August 22, 2012. Discounts are available for NISO and DCMI members and students. TIMBUS Training Day A free Training Day on Digital Preservation of Business Processes will take place on Tuesday, October 16 supported by the TIMBUS project. This full-day event is open to any interested party on first-come-first serve basis. The TIMBUS project addresses the challenge of digital preservation of business processes and services to ensure their long-term continued access. TIMBUS analyses and recommends which aspects of a business process should be preserved and how to preserve them. It delivers methodologies and tools to capture and formalise business processes on both technical and organisational levels. This includes preservation of their underlying software infrastructure, virtualization of their hardware infrastructure and capture of dependencies on local and third-party services and information. This means that, in addition to technical preservation metadata, it draws on metadata standards that capture business processes, such as BPMN, and is identifying forms of supporting business documentation needed to redeploy processes and services. The draft agenda is as follows: ? Introduction to Digital Preservation of Business Processes ? Context information, Metadata & Reasoning ? Risk Management in Digital Preservation ? Business Continuity Management ? Interactive Demo on Business Continuity Management ? Infrastructure, Architecture and Storage ? Legal issues of Digital Preservation ? In-depth study on Legal Issues The TIMBUS Project is co-funded by the European Union under FP7 ICT-2009-6 (Grant Agreement no. 269940). Please see http://timbusproject.net/events for more event details. Please, note that a charge of ?40.00 will apply for no-shows or cancellations within 48 hours of the event. To RSVP for this optional event, please check the box on the PASIG registration form for this optional event. Questions on this optional meeting can be directed to admin at timbusproject.net.
