The e-Science symposium provides an opportunity for librarians to learn about emerging library roles in e-science and research data services. This fifth symposium will take a look at a collaboration between a supercomputing center and library by featuring a two-part morning address by Richard Moore, Director of the University of California San Diego Supercomputing Center, and Ardys Kozbial, Director of the Research Data Curation Program at the University of California San Diego Library. Invitations for the symposium will be issued in late December or early January. For further details, see attached Save the Date flyer and the 2013 e-Science Symposium conference page.

Subject: [Rdap] ELNs for lab class use.
Message-ID: <4BB8E3E08D34034DB9A7D4F285555FB110F06BD0@X-MB8.xds.umail.utah.edu>
Hi all,
I've been nosing around my chemistry department looking for someone to work with me on implementing an Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) in their lab class without any success. So today a biology professor contacted me. He is teaching biochemistry and wanting to incorporate an ELN in his lab this spring. He has been looking at SparkLix (http://www.sparklix.com/), which is open source. He likes it because:
1. Free version available.
2. Web based, with ability to save results locally.
3. Straightforward interface.
4. Ability to share data with labmates
I have a libguide page on ELNs/virtual workspaces http://campusguides.lib.utah.edu/content.php?pid=126157&sid=2131670 , but no experience working with them. I'm being asked to find out from anyone who has experience using open source ELNs about reliability and longevity. The professor doesn't want his students to lose access to their work in the middle of a semester.
Any comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
