DSpace 1.0 was released on November 4, 2002. More than ten years later DSpace remains the most-used institutional repository software in the world providing preservation of, and access to millions of precious digital objects in more than 1,800 repositories. The DSpace Vision Survey , compiled by the DSpace Vision Group consisting of DuraSpace staff members, DSpace Committers, DSpace Community Advisory Team members, and other DSpace community members, was facilitated by DuraSpace. The survey aims to gather the collective thoughts of the DSpace user community in order to define and shape the future of DSpace over the coming years. Now that DSpace is 10+ years old, it's time to reflect on how far it has come and where it is going. An initial DSpace Vision meeting was held in May of 2013, followed by a community session at Open Repositories 2013 that resulted in achieving consensus on broad goals and directions. These can be viewed here (PDF). The DSpace Vision Group will analyze survey data to refine these initial goals and directions. It consists of four pages and will take 10-minutes to complete. You may comment on what you think DSpace is, what functionality it should offer in the future, and what systems it should integrate with. The DSpace Vision Survey will be open until the end of February. Feel free to answer as an individual, or to submit a single response from your organization: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/dspacevision THANK YOU for joining the exciting conversation about the future direction and development of DSpace by completing the DSpace Vision Survey (download the PDF version ). -- Carol Minton Morris DuraSpace Director of Marketing and Communications cmmorris at DuraSpace.org Skype: carolmintonmorris 607 592-3135 Twitter at DuraSpace Twitter at DuraCloud http://DuraSpace.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Research data management has become an important global issue as funding agencies, publishers, and disciplines increasingly require the sharing of publicly funded data. The Open Data movement treats curated data as a valuable resource available to support new research with the potential for new discoveries. Furthermore, the expectation that research findings can be replicated is pressuring researchers to make their data understandable and usable by others. Both the replication and reuse of research data are highly dependent on properly documented data. The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) provides two structured metadata specifications for describing the content and context of data about individuals or organizations (microdata) in the health, social, and behavioural sciences. This community-maintained standard for microdata is internationally recognized as a best practice in preparing, sharing, and preserving data. Interested in learning more? Please join us in Vancouver for the second North American DDI Users Conference , to be held March 31-April 2, 2014. Organized by the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Alberta Libraries, and the Institute for Policy and Social Research at the University of Kansas, the meeting will take place at the Harbour Center, Simon Fraser University, with the theme "Documenting Reproducible Research." The Keynote Speaker for the conference is Ann Green. She is an independent research consultant focusing on the digital lifecycle of scholarly resources, including their creation, delivery, management, long-term stewardship, and preservation. Ann has significant history and experience with the DDI, serving on the original DDI committee in 1995 and coauthoring the first DDI specification. The conference will feature training sessions on Monday, March 31, and an opening reception on the evening of April 1. Monday's training will cover an introduction to DDI in the morning and the use of DDI to document health-related data in the afternoon. Conference sessions focus on a wide range of innovative topics and projects -- from field-testing multilingual clinical assessments using DDI to chaining together existing DDI tools to documenting qualitative data. We hope to see you there! ---------------------------------- NADDI 2014 has two half-day workshops on March 31st that will be of interest to health researchers wanting to produce better metadata to support their research. Discover the Power of DDI Metadata Jane Fry, Carleton University March 31, 2014 Morning Workshop This workshop is appropriate for anyone who is responsible for managing microdata of individuals or organizations and has wondered how metadata could streamline their research. A brief background on the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) metadata standard will be followed by examples of using DDI and of tools that will help you produce and exploit DDI metadata. The participants will be presented with different applications running DDI metadata that showcase the discovery of and access to research data. Producing DDI metadata from two popular formats (SPSS and Excel) will be demonstrated and the tools that subsequently exploit these metadata will be shown (NESSTAR and Colectica Excel). Finally, participants will be presented with a data lifecycle workflow example that illustrates how metadata production and research data management can be integrated. As an introduction to DDI, no previous knowledge of this standard is required. There will be plenty of time for questions. The examples in this workshop will be primarily related to health research. DDI and Health Related Research David Johnson, University of Kansas and Barry Radler, University of Wisconsin March 31, 2014 Afternoon Workshop This workshop will be a seminar with Dr. Radler and Dr. Johnson describing their use of the DDI standard in health-related research. This format will encourage plenty of discussion with participants. Dr. Johnson is a clinical researcher who specializes in cognitive and emotional processes that characterize healthy aging and dementia. In his research through the Center for Hispanic American Research Methods, Dr. Johnson uses the DDI lifecycle specification with a wide variety of data instruments, including Computer Assisted Testing (CATI), REDCap (both online data entry or email surveys), LIME Survey and its associated Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software (QueXF), or more traditional Paper-and-Pencil via PDFs. Dr. Radler is currently the data management director of the Midlife Development in the U.S. project, a national longitudinal study of aging that uses the DDI to develop web-based documentation. DDI is essential for documenting the dynamic and complex nature of this research and facilitates the understanding, use, and analysis of multiple inter-related datasets. Both speakers bring a wealth of practical knowledge and experience in applying DDI to clinical and longitudinal research data. =//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=// Carla Graebner Liaison Librarian: Economics and Government Information; Data Curator and Digital Preservation Project Manager W.A.C. North American DDI Users Conference March 31 - April 2nd in Vancouver, BC Message-ID: <319973241.10053040.1392664627681.JavaMail.root@sfu.ca> Hi Everyone, The first time I posted this, the conference URL didn't appear so, with apologies, I'm reposting this: North American DDI Users Conference http://www.rdl.sfu.ca/NADDI/ Research data management has become an important global issue as funding agencies, publishers, and disciplines increasingly require the sharing of publicly funded data. Archive-It partners can now seamlessly access DuraCloud's key features for offsite back-up and preservation of their web archive collections. In addition to Archive-It's existing storage and access offerings, DuraCloud is another option for off-site preservation that includes the ability to back up content in the cloud, access automatic content health checks and health reports, and is directly integrated with Amazon Glacier as an additional option for very low-cost storage. Archive-It (archive-it.org), a web archiving service from Internet Archive, and DuraCloud (duracloud.org), a managed service for archiving content in the cloud from DuraSpace, teamed up to create this new feature and to provide Archive-It partner organizations with additional options to back-up their collections of archived content. During fall 2013 Columbia University, Rice University, the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources: State Library and Archives were part of a pilot program that successfully tested the service. *How it works* Archive-It partners who decide to subscribe to DuraCloud have the ability to back up all of their Archive-It collections, specific web collections, or exact time periods within individual collections. After signing up for the service, DuraCloud will transfer a copy of content from an Archive-It account and store the web archive files in DuraCloud. The Archive-It account is then monitored for additions to the collection over time and synchronizes those to DuraCloud. The best part of using this new service is that it requires no additional user action. Once the service is enabled, back-ups to DuraCloud are automatic. *Get started today* Preserving your Archive-It collection in DuraCloud allows you to check the box on reliable offsite back-up and long term access of your content. Archive-It partners can sign up for the service through the DuraCloud web site (duracloud.org/archive-it), which includes more information and pricing. *Sign up by March 31, 2013 and the content transfer fee will be waived.* *About DuraSpace* DuraSpace (http://duraspace.org) is an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization providing leadership and innovation for open technologies that promote durable, persistent access to digital data. We collaborate with academic, scientific, cultural, and technology communities by supporting projects (DSpace, Fedora) and creating services (DuraCloud, DSpaceDirect) to help ensure that current and future generations have access to our collective digital heritage. Features of note include an Authorization framework, Policy-driven storage, support for advanced Search and Triplestore indexes, Large files, Transactions, and Versioning to name a few. Considerable effort has also been put towards the creation of user documentation and a simplified means of deploying Fedora 4. All said, Fedora 4 is now encouraging the community to download, install, and give the new feature-set a try. *Fundraising* - As of December 2013, contributions to DuraSpace earmarked for Fedora total $413,833, a 139% increase over last year's total of $173,000. A total of forty sponsors have contributed, with eleven new sponsors, fifteen sponsors who have upgraded their investment, three non-renewals and two sponsor downgrades. While excellent progress has been made in the past year, the project is still short of its goal of reaching the $500,000 annual support level. *New Web Site* - http://fedorarepository.org - Based on input from the Fedora community, DuraSpace staff have redesigned the Fedora web site. The web site and wiki provide the latest updates about Fedora development, highlight use case profiles and community engagement, provide updates on past and upcoming meetings, and includes a variety of resources for the Fedora community. Web site users may now view and sort repositories by repository technology type and find out where they are located ( http://registry.duraspace.org/registry/fedora). The Fedora Steering Group welcomes suggestions and feedback as we continue to improve communications and outreach about Fedora. *Staffing* - The Fedora Project continues to ramp up staffing and support in order to meet the many goals of the project. Over the past quarter, Andrew Woods provided invaluable support as full-time tech lead, coordinating the efforts of (12) developers at (10) different institutions. Many thanks go to Michele Kimpton, Jonathan Markow, Valorie Hollister, Carol Minton Morris and the rest of the DuraSpace team for coordinating the sponsorship campaign, budget planning, several conferences, hack fests, and the new web site redesign. The Fedora Steering Group is currently in the process of interviewing for the dedicated Fedora product manager, expected to be hired in the first quarter of 2014. Working closely with the Fedora Steering Group, Advisory Group, developers and Fedora community, the product manager [1] will help set the vision and long-term roadmap for the product, raise annual funding levels to meet project goals, and be an effective spokesperson for the project. *Community Engagement and Outreach* - In the past quarter, developers have continued to hold daily meetings in conjunction with development sprints, as well as an "install fest" and week-long hack fest in Austin at the DLF conference. Two Fedora Advisory Group meetings were held, one immediately after DLF in Austin, and one immediately after CNI in Washington, D.C., along with multiple Advisory Group conference calls. In addition to the web set redesign, mailing lists have been created to merge past community discussions with current work. *Upcoming Conferences* - Fedora presentations and meetings will occur at HydraConnect (San Diego, CA) in January, IDCC (San Francisco, CA) in February, Code4Lib (Raleigh, NC), RDA (Dublin, Ireland), Fedora DC Users Group meeting (Washington, D.C.), and the DuraSpace Sponsors Summit (Washington, D.C.) all in March. [1] In late January the DuraSpace organization announced that David Wilcox accepted a position with DuraSpace as the product manager for the Fedora project effective February 17, 2014. In his role as product manager for Fedora David will be working closely with the community and steering group to set the vision and long term roadmap for Fedora. David joins Fedora technical director Andrew Woods as dedicated Fedora project staff.
