Bill Mischo, Mary Schlembach and Megan O'Donnell have been working on a review and analysis of DMPs at University of Illinois, and they presented some of their results at RDAP14 - http://www.slideshare.net/asist_org/rdap14-an-analysis-and-characterization-of-dmps-in-nsf-proposals-from-the-university-of-illinois

Hi Daureen,

I haven't any article suggestions for you, but I've always found the reviewer's guide from John Hopkins University for NSF DMPs quite useful http://dmp.data.jhu.edu/resources/grant-reviewers-guide/

Hope it helps.

Best,
Amy

Hi,

I know I've come across a few articles reviewing faculty DMPs, but cannot seem to find them now when being asked for them.

Can anyone provide examples of reviews of DMPs at their universities?

Thanks,

Daureen

Hi Daureen,

I think I have read some as well, but it's way past my work time here in the east, and it is Friday night. Here's an IMLS study that proposes to assess DMPs.

Data Management Plans as a Research Tool: The DART Project (IMLS National Leadership Grant LG-07-13-0328, $155,464)

Data management plans (DMP) provide a window into the detailed individual data management habits, capabilities and needs of faculty and their graduate students. Structured analysis of DMPs can provide insight into the kinds of data researchers are generating, and how they are managing those data in current and future projects. From the library's perspective, this information is fundamental to providing research data support services that are tailored to the needs of the faculty and students we aim to support. This two-year NLG-Libraries Demonstration Project, led by Oregon State University in collaboration with the University of Oregon, Purdue University, the Georgia Institute of Technology and Pennsylvania State University, will facilitate a multi-university study of faculty data management plans (DMPs). The primary outcome of the project will be the development of an analytic rubric to standardize the review of data management plans, providing a means to inform targeted ex!

pansion or development of research data services at academic libraries.

Resources to Support Faculty Writing Data Management Plans: Lessons Learned

from an Engineering Pilot

Abstract

Recent years have seen a growing emphasis on the need for improved

management of research data. Academic libraries have begun to articulate

the conceptual foundations, roles, and responsibilities involved in data

management planning and implementation. This paper provides an overview of

the Engineering data support pilot at the University of Michigan Library as

part of developing new data services and infrastructure. Through this pilot

project, a team of librarians had an opportunity to identify areas where

the library can play a role in assisting researchers with data management,

and has put forth proposals for immediate steps that the library can take

in this regard. The paper summarizes key findings from a faculty survey and

discusses lessons learned from an analysis of data management plans from

accepted NSF proposals. A key feature of this Engineering pilot project was

to ensure that these study results will provide a foundation for librarians

to educate and assist researchers with managing their data throughout the

research lifecycle.
