From Donna.Kafel at umassmed.edu Wed Aug 5 14:42:49 2015 From: Donna.Kafel at umassmed.edu (Kafel, Donna) Date: Wed, 5 Aug 2015 18:42:49 +0000 Subject: [Rdap] Redesigned e-Science Portal is launched! Message-ID: <796428EE4BB0764AB85A62F1BE459CE536B495DC@ummscsmbx07.ad.umassmed.edu> Dear Colleagues, I'm pleased to announce the launch of the redesigned e-Science Portal for New England Librarians! Over the past year, the portal team and Editorial Board has conducted multiple rounds of user studies-online and in person, to assess how users were finding (or not finding) information in their searches, the navigability of the site, and the discoverability of key resources on the portal. A huge thank you to the librarians and library students who participated in the user testing- their responses and feedback have greatly informed this redesign. Along with a new look, the e-Science Portal 2.0 features: * A "Getting started with e-Science" quick guide * Events calendar and Twitter feed on homepage * Links to recent e-Science Community blog posts * Prominent hyperlinks to e-Science Partner Projects (New England e-Science Symposium, Science Boot Camp, New England Collaborative Data Management Curriculum (NECDMC), Journal of eScience Librarianship) * Reorganized content headings (e.g. About, Connect with Others, Data Management, and Research Environment sections) * Links to data tools-posted on a delegated "Data Tools" page as well as in relevant pages such as data curation * Editor's photo, bio, and contact form on portal pages-making it easier for you to contact the Editors directly For further details about the portal redesign and the people behind it, check out today's e-Science Community blog post "Portal 2.0 is here" by Jen Ferguson, co-chair of the e-Science Portal Editorial Board. Please check out the portal and let us know what you think! There are many ways to make contact with the people behind the portal: on Twitter @nerescience, contact a portal editor, comment on the e-Science Community blog, or just drop me a line! We hope to see many of our regional colleagues there! More info: The Midwest Data Librarian Symposium (MDLS) is an opportunity for midwestern librarians who work in research data management to collectively problem solve and network. This unconference-style symposium will be held on October 15 and 16 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The event is being sponsored by both UW-Milwaukee and UW-Madison. The schedule will feature a hands-on workshop on improving data management instruction and facilitated conversations on four current topics in data management: consulting on data, curating research data, forming partnerships on campus, and teaching data management. The goal of these discussion is to share success stories and brainstorm solutions to common problems. Registration is currently open and will be capped at 50 participants. While the symposium is intended as a regional event for data librarians, it is open to all who wish to attend, including future data librarians and data librarians situated outside the midwest. The event coincides with the eResearch Australasia Conference (http://conference.eresearch.edu.au) and will take place in the same venue?the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. The workshop is being generously subsidized by the University of New South Wales (UNSW, http://www.unsw.com) so the cost for attending is only $80AUD. *Register here. * *About the Fedora 4 Training Workshop* Fedora is a robust, modular, open source repository platform for the management, preservation, and dissemination of digital content, including research data. Fedora, the new, revitalized version of the software, was released into production in November of 2014. Fedora 4 features include vast improvements in scalability, linked data capabilities, research data support, modularity, ease of use, and more. This Fedora 4 Training Workshop will provide an introduction to and overview of Fedora 4, with a focus on migration and Fedora 4?s latest features. After an initial review of the most significant new features, participants will learn about how to migrate from earlier versions of Fedora to Fedora 4. This will include a review and demonstration of available migration tools, as well as a discussion on data modeling best practices. There will also be a presentation on UNSW?s recently completed Fedora 3 to 4 migration work. Attendees will have the opportunity (in Section 4) to participate in a hands-on session and explore Fedora 4 by following step-by-step instructions using a preconfigured virtual machine environment. This will give participants a chance to explore the new features and experience Fedora 4 first-hand. Developers and administrators interested in working on Fedora 4 will learn about the software development process and procedures, including how to integrate Fedora 4 with external applications, such as search platforms (e.g. Solr) and triplestores. Two of the overall aims of the workshop are to encourage familiarity with and uptake of Fedora 4 within the Australian repository community, and bring Australian developers into the global Fedora community while raising our profile in the research support arena.
