of Arizona Libraries
Message-ID: <37c111a76f8f4a49b64cb65ba681a407@lavender.catnet.arizona.edu>
Please excuse cross postings ...
We're looking for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Arizona Libraries. It's a one-year appointment, although we will probably convert it into a permanent research data management position.
This position will serve two major purposes: 1) as part of the Data Management and Data Publication and Curation (DMDC) Pilot, provide support for five research projects (chemical engineering and education, cancer research, public health, entomology, and ecology) participating in the pilot by developing templates, workflows etc., assisting in setting up data management technology and tools, and providing metadata support; and 2) work with the data curation librarian to expand data management and curation services and programs focusing on reaching out to campus to provide a variety of educational support for data management and data curation. The incumbent will continue to develop their research competencies by working with the research groups on data management technology and tools (as part of the pilot); and by developing advanced data management workshops.
The position will be open until filled.
The complete position is available at https://uacareers.com/postings/12498 and includes information for submitting an application.
Please feel free to forward to anyone you think would be interested!

Thomson Reuters to Provide Institutional Support Services for VIVO as
Registered Service Provider
*Thomson Reuters will help VIVO users enable collaboration and discovery*
*Austin, TX* Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property & Science business (IP &
Science) has become a DuraSpace Registered Service Provider (RSP) for the
VIVO Project. DuraSpace is a not-for-profit organization providing open
technologies and services that promote durable access to digital data.
Thomson Reuters intellectual property and science professionals drive
innovation, protect intellectual assets and create maximum value from their
ideas by providing solutions that power the intellectual property
lifecycle. Thomson Reuters is a long-time supporter of the VIVO project,
and can help organizations implement and extend VIVO to meet their needs
through data services and complementary software and services, such as
Converis, InCites and the Web of Science.
"As a Registered Service Provider for VIVO, Thomson Reuters will help
ensure that institutions can fully participate in making research and
institutional resources available for search, discovery, and analysis,?
explained Jonathan Markow, CSO of DuraSpace. ?We heartily welcome them to
the RSP Program!?
VIVO, an open source, semantic web application and growing global
community, is aimed at integrating and sharing information about
researchers and institutions to support collaboration and discovery. As a
DuraSpace project, VIVO institutions and DuraSpace members now have a
greater opportunity to develop related technologies and services across
broad academic and scientific communities.
Julia Laurin, Head of Product Management for the Government and Academia
group within IP& Science at Thomson Reuters said, ?As a long-time supporter
of VIVO, we?re excited about the opportunities this partnership makes
available, especially helping institutions to easily populate VIVO with
rich journal article data in an efficient and maintainable way, which has
been a common challenge.?

*NOW AVAILABLE: VIVO 1.9 Release*
The VIVO team is proud to announce that VIVO 1.9 was released on August 8,
2016.
Full release notes are included below and are also available on the wiki:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/VIVODOC19x/Release+Notes
Downloads are available on the GitHub release page:
https://github.com/vivo-project/VIVO/releases/tag/rel-1.9.0
Version 1.9 of the VIVO open source software includes several significant
new features that will improve the user experience and make it simpler to
implement VIVO.
This release was made possible by contributions from the following
community members:
Ariel D Moya Sequoia, IT Alkaid Consulting S.A.
Stephan Zednik, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Christian Hauschke, Bibliothek der Hochschule Hannover
Roberto J. Rodrigues, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro
Benjamin Gross, UNAVCO
Chad Nelson, Temple University Library

Simon Porter, Digital Science / University of Melbourne
Mat?j Korvas, University of Melbourne
Martin Kwok, University of Melbourne
Melissa Makin, University of Melbourne
*Here?s what?s new:*
*Capability Map* -- Matching research areas with experts just got easier
To address the desire for improved expert finding features in VIVO, we are
pleased to introduce a capability map. This feature allows you to search
for research areas, and see the relationship between the research areas and
the researchers.
Initially developed at the University of Melbourne, the map has been
updated to use the improved visualisation architecture introduced in VIVO
1.8.1. Results are cached in the same way as other VIVO visualizations such
as the Map of Science, Co-Author visualization, and Temporal Graph.
*SEO Improvements* -- Making profile pages more discoverable
For better indexing and discoverability of your VIVO profiles, a sitemap
generator for profiles is now included.
Additionally, citation meta tags are now included on the pages of works.
*AltMetrics Improvements*
Following the addition of AltMetric badges to publications with DOIs in
1.8.1, the support has been expanded to cover publications with PubMed IDs
or ISBNs.
AltMetric badges are now displayed on the publication lists within a
profile page.
*Maven Project Structure*
To make it easier to get started with VIVO, standard Maven project
structures are now used, replacing the custom Ant scripts of previous
versions.
Both VIVO and Vitro have been migrated to Maven. Developers cloning the
projects from GitHub, should place them in directories next to each other.
*Maven Based Installer*
Version 1.9 introduces an "installer" project, which will assemble the
application and home directories, and copy them to your Tomcat and
installation / home directories.
The installer will automatically download all of the necessary dependencies
- including pre-built Vitro and VIVO code - in order to complete the
installation.
This installer also provides a natural place for sites to add their
customizations, such as a custom theme, additional Java classes in the web
application or RDF in the home directory.
*OpenJDK Support*
The image processor for uploading and generating thumbnails has been
replaced with a new library. As a result, there are no known OpenJDK
incompatibilities.
*Performance Improvements*
Thanks to Brian Lowe, Ontocale, there are significant improvements writing
data to the triple store, with an updated inferencer batching changes in
memory.
There are also minor improvements to graph comparison code (improving
startup time for large graphs), and memory reductions for the caching of
data in the visualizations.
*SPARQL Editor Highlighting*
The YASQE highlighting editor for SPARQL has been incorporated into the
SPARQL Query page, thanks to a contribution from Ted Lawless, Thomson
Reuters.

Message-ID:
*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*
July 28, 2016
*IMLS Contact *Giuliana Bullard gbullard at imls.gov
202-653-4799
*FY 2017 Guidelines Announced for Grants to Boost Library Profession and
Improve Field *
* September 1 is the first of two FY 2017 deadlines for applications to
IMLS *
*Washington, DC -* The Institute of Museum and Library Services has
announced the guidelines for the first round of FY 2017 National
Leadership Grants for Libraries (NLG)
and Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program (LB21)
.
The NLG program invests in projects that address challenges faced by the
library and archive fields and generate results such as new tools, research
findings, or models that can be widely used. The LB21 program supports
human capital capacity projects for libraries and archives. This call for
preliminary proposals has a deadline of September 1, 2016, for both
programs. A separate funding opportunity for both programs will be
announced in December with a deadline in February 2017.
>From the preliminary proposals received in September, IMLS will select
applicants and invite them to submit full proposals by January 13, 2016.
Applicants who are not invited to continue from the first round of funding
may submit new preliminary proposals in February.
As outlined in the 2017 IMLS Congressional Justification, IMLS is
especially interested in projects that address the following priorities:
1.* Community Anchors:* NLG projects that advance the role of libraries as
community anchors that provide civic and cultural engagement, facilitate
lifelong learning, promote digital inclusion, and support economic vitality
through programming and services. LB21 projects that investigate and build
the skills and knowledge of library professionals to support the role of
libraries as community anchors that facilitate lifelong learning; enhance
civic and cultural engagement; and support economic vitality, through
programming and services.
2.* National Digital Platform:* NLG projects that create, develop, and
expand the social and technical infrastructure and the open source software
applications used by libraries and archives to provide digital content and
services to all users in the United States. LB21 projects that increase
library professionals' capacity to create, develop, and use the social and
technical infrastructure and the open source software applications used by
libraries and archives to provide digital content and services to all users
in the United States. NDP projects bridge gaps between disparate pieces of
the existing digital infrastructure for increased efficiencies, cost
savings, access, and services.
3.* Curating Collections:* NLG projects that can have a significant
national impact on shared services for the preservation and management of
digital library collections and content across the country. LB21 projects
that increase librarians' and library professionals' capacity to create,
preserve, manage, and provide access to digital library collections across
the country.
Applicants to the LB21 program are required to align their projects with a
project category, i.e., National Digital Platform, Community Anchors, or
Curating Collections. Projects must also align with a project type, i.e.,
Pre-Professional; Masters-level and Doctoral-level Programs; Early Career
Development; or Continuing Education.
The Sparks! Ignition Grants for Libraries is now a funding category within
the National Leadership Grants program, rather than a standalone
program. Sparks grants support new tools, products, services, or
organizational practices. Sparks preliminary proposals will now be accepted
twice a year, instead of full proposals accepted once a year.
See the grant program guidelines for more information about LB21
or NLG
programs.
*Getting Your Questions Answered*
IMLS staff members listed on the NLG
and LB21
program pages are available by phone and email to answer general questions
related to the programs.

Chances are this is stemming from export control laws, which state that specific types of data cannot travel outside the US. II've only had this apply to some oceanography, satellite, and Dept of Defense data. If you don't have an Export Control officer (typically in the Office of Compliance), I can get you more info on this.
Thanks,

Hi,
When NASA first addressed the 2013 White House OSTP mandate it was saying they would require publications to be submitted to PubMed since there was no funding.

NASA Launches Free Online Database With Research Papers, Data.
The Verge [Share to Facebook] [Share to Twitter] (8/19) reported NASA announced last week that its launching a free online archive called PubSpace that will make public "research and data that are often hidden behind the subscriptions and paywalls of scientific journals." The article explains that PubSpace rose to the fore as part of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's "Open Science" initiative, which was established to enhance access to government-funded research.
The Independent (UK) [Share to Facebook] [Share to Twitter] (8/20, Walker) adds that the new database is part of a "trend in the worldwide scientific community towards making knowledge more readily available." In a statement, NASA Chief Scientist Ellen Stofan said, "Making our research data easier to access will greatly magnify the impact of our research," adding, "As scientists and engineers, we work by building upon a foundation laid by others."

Subject: [Rdap] Call for Chapter Proposals - Applying Library Values to
Emerging Technology: Tips and Techniques for Advancing within Your Mission
Message-ID:
Forwarding for a colleague:
We?re excited to invite you to submit chapter proposals for our forthcoming ACRL book, Applying Library Values to Emerging Technology: Tips and Techniques for Advancing within Your Mission
The Book
As emerging technologies become easier to use, public service information professionals of all kinds are increasingly tasked with making decisions regarding which technologies to use, promote, and provide support for. These technology-mediated exchanges can play an important role in how information, and the library, is perceived and used.
This book will share perspectives on how to interpret and apply the ALA's Core Values of Librarianship in the context of emerging technologies as well highlight case studies of organizations and applications that exemplify relevant library values. It will be grounded in theory, but be made applicable to a variety of libraries by situating discussions within a framework for decision-making.
Authors will retain copyright of their work, and after one year the entire book will be made available open access.
Structure
The book will be organized into chapters corresponding with the values identified in the ALA's Core Values of Librarianship, but individual chapters do not need to tie directly to any particular interpretation of those values (see ?Chapter Details?). Authors should consider library values in the context of emerging technology, and what the implications are for making decisions about library practice.
The editors are interested in considering a wide variety of perspectives and forms of submissions in order to be relevant to a broad audience
Each section will include both:
? Practical case studies of how to effectively use a particular technology in a library setting
? Theoretical models for understanding and interpreting the relevant library value (or values) in context of a relevant technology
Most submissions should include at least some elements of theory and practice, but can focus on any aspect. We will also consider submissions featuring just one element (an important theoretical consideration that could impact other works, or a particularly impactful case study).
Copyright
Priority will be given to producing the best possible final work that is meaningful to a wide audience rather than necessarily ?original research,? so authors may reuse portions of previous works when copyright allows. If doing so, authors are expected to revise their work and provide at minimum an introduction and conclusion that fit with the theme of this volume.
Chapter Details
For a more context and suggested topics for each chapter visit this document: https://goo.gl/slsCNV
Potential Sections Include:
? Confidentiality/Privacy & Intellectual Freedom
? Access/Democracy
? The Public Good/Social Responsibility & Education and Lifelong Learning
? Preservation
? Diversity
? Service
? Professionalism
Examples of topics include:
? Libraries providing access to encryption technology
? Libraries providing training/access to technology that enables expression
? Libraries relationship to modern efforts to censor (e.g. NSA; Patriot Act; China?s firewall)
? Technology that supports Open Access
? The #ICANHAZPDF phenomenon, and technology surrounding interlibrary loan
? Licensing/copyright agreements and library values
? Preventing link-rot and related issues with archiving websites
? Issues surrounding private/public communications online (e.g. preserving e-mails, Facebook posts and other semi-public digital objects stored on private servers)
? How library interfaces impact diversity
? How library values such as professionalism and service can be embodied in technology decisions
Don?t see your topic/idea here? We encourage you to contact the editors at valuesandtechnologyacrl at gmail.com to discuss how your idea may fit within this book?s scope.
Proposal Guidelines and Submission Instructions
A short form with an attached Word document (.doc or .docx) is required for proposal submission. The Word document should be written in Times New Roman, 12 pt., be double-spaced, and include:
? A working title
? Names of all contributing authors & their respective institutions
? Contact information for the primary author
? Estimated final word count
? A brief (250-500 word) description of your proposed chapter
? Please identify any relevant library values and technologies, and if your chapter will include any explicit recommendations for decision making
Attach your chapter submission proposal to an email with the subject line: Chapter Proposal Submission_(PrimaryAuthor?sLastName)
And send to: valuesandtechnologyacrl at gmail.com
Our information
Peter Fernandez, Interim Head, LRE Liaison Programs University of Tennessee Libraries
Kelly Tilton, Information Literacy Instruction Librarian at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Important Dates
Proposals are due October 10th, 2016
? Contributors will be notified of their status (acceptance or rejection) by October 31, 2016
? Deadline to submit the first draft of accepted chapters for revision: February 1, 2017
? Submission of edited volume to publisher: May 31, 2017

* Size and measured demand of the community served, placed in the context of the overall field.
* The ongoing rate of data deposition and data access or download
* Indicators of data repository quality and impact. Examples include but are not limited to:
* Publications from the data
* Data citations
* Altmetrics
* Patents
* Utilization of data sets in research studies
* Outputs of those research studies, e.g. use in policies or guidelines
* Enhanced data sharing and community collaboration around annotation/analysis of data sets
