Clinical Data Research Specialist

The University of Virginia seeks a service-oriented data specialist to join the Health Sciences Library's Research and Data Services team supporting the UVA Health System's biomedical research endeavors. This position will develop and provide consultation and education services supporting the discovery, acquisition, and use of data for health-related research.

The Environment

The University of Virginia is an internationally renowned research and teaching institution ranking 2nd nationally among public universities according to US News Best Colleges.  In today's academic research environment, data plays a central role in how new knowledge is created.  The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library is a fast paced collaborative environment that broadly defines its role in serving biomedical researchers though specialized bioinformatics instruction, training, and consultation.

Responsibilities

The Clinical Research Data Specialist will develop and provide educational opportunities to support researchers at all proficiency levels, assessing needs, coordinate learning opportunities, and actively marketing content. The incumbent will develop a roster of workshops and online modules to provide hands-on training in technical data management, clinical statistics, and presentation, both leading these sessions and also recruiting appropriate instructors to provide content. The Clinical Research Data Specialist will identify useful local, statewide, national, and international biomedical data sources and consult on acquisition, transfer, and storage. In addition, the specialist will provide guidance on using software, web applications, and relational databases for health related research for collecting, cleaning, and interpreting data. The specialist will collaborate with staff from other institutional units and pan-university efforts such as the UVA BioConnector, Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (THRIV), and Computation and Data Resource Exchange (CADRE).

Requirements

Master's degree in Computer, Information, Data Science, or, academic discipline with quantitative research experience. Excellent communication skills. Desire to provide highly responsive user-centered services. Proficiency with one or more statistical software environment such as SPSS, SAS, etc. Interest in providing instruction, both formal and informal, to varying audiences and skill levels. Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work independently and on teams.
