From this experience, I have two lingering questions: How many scholarly publishers (and which ones) are establishing these types of criteria and providing ?badges?? Do data repositories regularly time-stamp and freeze data sets? Since I work with ELNs (electronic lab notebooks) I?m aware these systems generally do (FDA regulations) provide time-stamp and freezing of notebooks. I?m wondering if ELNs? time-stamp can substitute for repository time-stamp Daureen From: Rdap [mailto:rdap-bounces at asis.org] On Behalf Of Ruth Duerr Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2017 5:47 PM To: Research Data, Access and Preservation Subject: Re: [Rdap] data repository assistance please Hear! I'd like to make a strong plug for going with ICSPR over half-baked solutions here. ICPSR has a huge amount of experience and significant technical infrastructure to handle highly sensitive data (and most things that are directly identifiable qualify). They charge money for the use of their virtual enclave because that's very expensive to maintain (which is why few other places do it). The problem with putting a metadata entry in an IR is that you don't get preservation services, which is half the reason you put data in a repository in the first place. Even if we assume the researcher handles access requests, who will provide multiple back-ups, fixity checks/protection against link rot, file type migration if needed, etc.? The reason this is somewhat viable in Andrew's scenario is that the data are actually properly archived elsewhere. If that's not the case, this is, in my opinion, a no go, and repository managers should not allow, let alone promote, it. Harvard Dataverse (as well as Zenodo, another self-deposit option that allows restrictions) is _not_ a robust solution, at this time, for sensitive data (this is planned for the 5.0 release of the software they use; they're currently at 4.6 [1]). While it is possible to restrict access to data, I am pretty sure that they are stored unencrypted on the server. I know that's not acceptable for sensitive data from an information security point of view and I _think_ (but am not a lawyer) you may actually break the law by using it for personally identified data. So please make a pitch to your researcher for the value of curated, secure repositories like ICPSR for sensitive data. My two (rather passionate) cents on this. Hope you had fun in Seattle. I have a researcher in psych with spreadsheet data that cannot be de-identified. See http://idrh.ku.edu/dhforum2017 for more details. ________________________________ Digital Storytelling & the Humanities ________________________________ This year's DH Forum will focus on the theory and practice of digital storytelling as it relates to humanities research, teaching and learning. In particular, we seek innovative approaches and examples of digital storytelling that address questions related to democratizing DH practices, communicating knowledge and research, and representing underrepresented languages, places and peoples. Storytelling is fundamental to human experience and used for creative expression, communication, and self-conception at the personal, community, and international levels. Narratives and stories represent how we understand the world and provide the matrix in which arguments cohere. Digital media hardware and software have expanded the forums and techniques available for the creation and reception of compelling narratives and have encouraged new literacies and approaches to narrative form and function. Digital stories may engage audiences across various media in a multi-modal ways, encourage new forms of interaction with data and code, and take advantage of the interactive possibilities of the Web and mobile platforms. Some digital stories interweave the affordances of digital media with storytelling practices and poetics to produce co-created, algorithmic, location-based, and non-linear narratives. Other digital stories take advantage of the proliferation of digital networks to tell personal or untold stories or to communicate complex knowledge about human experiences in immediate and interactive ways. ________________________________ We welcome proposals for * paper/research presentations (approx. 20 minute presentations); * panel or discussion sessions (30-60 minutes, with multiple participants); * workshops on digital storytelling tools, platforms, methods and pedagogy (1 - 3 hour sessions); * creative works of digital storytelling that may be displayed as part of an exhibition session. ________________________________ Topics may include (but are not limited to) the following: * The connection between digital storytelling, knowledge production, and humanities scholarship; * How can digital storytelling facilitate telling stories of underrepresented languages, places and people; * Innovative examples of Indigenous and minoritized stories, multilingual and non-English language stories, and local and regional histories; * Digital storytelling for public humanities and civic engagement; * Digital stories for scholarly communication and broader impact initiatives (including communicating your scholarship to wide audiences in new ways); * Digital storytelling within museums, cultural institutions, or exhibition spaces; * Ethics and best practices in digital storytelling; * Storytelling with open datasets; * Techniques, successes/failures, case studies and impact stories of digital storytelling; * Methods and genres, including oral histories, podcasting, locative media, multimedia & transmedia narratives, social media, video games, computational narratives, data visualization, electronic literature and others; * Maps as stories and/or mapping stories; * Tools and platforms for digital storytelling including innovations in virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D modeling, artificial intelligence, or other emerging technologies; * Innovations in expanded media, creative or artistic works. ________________________________ Students are encouraged to apply. [http://rdmi.uchicago.edu/Newsletter/images/main_image.jpg] Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the RDMI workshop will be held on September 14 and 15th at the Westin Arlington Gateway, 801 N. Glebe Road, Arlington, VA, 22203. Mark your calendars now, and check the RDMI website for updates on schedules, speakers, and position or experience papers. Modern research requires researchers to navigate a large number of complex data management activities to collect, organize, analyze, share, store, and preserve their data, while also working to make their data more open, discoverable, and reproducible. September 2017 14 September 2017 15 Unfortunately, researchers often lack the time, resources, and expertise to perfectly execute all of these activities. Since the last RDMI workshop in 2013, there have been many funded projects and research communities discussing and developing RDMI tools and services. While requirements for data management have been in place for six years, many researchers are still not entirely clear on what a good implementation strategy should look like or what their specific responsibilities are with respect to data management. RDMI is designed to focus on implementations of solutions for managing the storage of research data and encourage open discussion of available strategies for data management in specific fields based on actual case studies. The workshop will discuss the impact RDMI has on science, developing RDMI in partnership with research communities, and increasing access to RDMI for the broader research community. RDMI will bring together research computing communities, funding agencies, and leading experts in data management to reflect on what has been accomplished to date related to data management, share achievements and opportunities for further contributions moving forward. Registration will be limited to 100 attendees. To accommodate as many institutions as possible, there will be a limit of 2 attendees per institution. For those unable to attend, the workshops will be webcast. Registration will open on June 8, 2017. Contact us at rdmi at rcc.uchicago.edu for any further questions.
