Does your institution maintain a GIS specific data server as part of data services (as an example, ESRI ArcGIS for Server coupled to postgresql with POSTGIS)? If so, what platform/stack are you using? We are considering such a service here at the University of Miami and any insight would be great. Please reply to tnorris at miami.edu and I can compile the results for a later post. thanks tim Timothy Norris Data Scientist University of Miami Libraries Center for Computational Science -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The voting period will be from Dec 11, 2018- January 4, 2019. Find the Bylaws attached; Vote here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XNS3L5Q . Please know that your continued engagement is what makes this community strong and makes the association (still in its infancy, but developing every day) possible. Because our Bylaws address our governance structure, I wanted to note a few things for folks who are catching up on the progress of the RDAP Association and/or need a refresher. >From mid-2016 through early 2018, a group called the Future Vision Task Force (FVTF), originally a subset of the conference planning committee and later made up of volunteers solicited through the RDAP listserv, set forth to examine RDAP?s relationship with its parent organization ASIS&T and possible future directions. The task force conducted research, shared progress with the community, received feedback from the community, and made recommendations for the future of RDAP at the 2018 Summit. The recommendation was independence from any parent organization and the community voted in favor. At the RDAP 2018 Summit and through listserv communications following the summit, volunteers or nominations were made for the Executive Board and Action Committees (conference planning, sponsorship, marketing, education, publishing). As noted in the FVTF Report, Executive Board elections were held following the ACRL nomination model and coordinated by Yasmeen Shorish and Andrew Johnson (both active in ACRL and members of the FVTF). The Executive Board members volunteered or were nominated without a competing community member and were thus given the position for a one year term without the need for an election. The FVTF suggested that I (Erica M. Johns) be the inaugural president to keep the institutional knowledge of the FVTF within the Board during its first year. The Executive Board considers this year transitional, as there has been much work to get the association formed; after the Bylaws are voted upon, we will begin our work on initiating an election process and developing a membership model. A few logistics have to be resolved before a membership model can be developed, but they will be added to the Bylaws in the future. We are currently looking for a code of conduct officer who can be the unbiased point person for feedback that needs to be shared with the board, more on this soon. To review the documents and survey results (such as the FVTF report, independence vote, values response, etc.) please see our OSF page here: https://osf.io/uydpe/ . The theme of the conference is Data Down Under: Exploring "Data Firsts". IASSIST offers fellowships that help provide financial support to participate in the conference. Kindly please forward this announcement to your members. Thank you very much. Best regards, Florio Arguillas, Ph.D. IASSIST Fellows Committee Chair ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The IASSIST Fellows Program is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for financial support to attend the IASSIST 2019 conference in Sydney, Australia from data professionals who are developing, supporting and managing data infrastructures at their home institutions. The mission of the IASSIST Fellows Program is to provide support for data professionals from countries with emerging economies and underrepresented regions who are developing information infrastructures regarding the use and preservation of public and private data and implementing information policy decisions at their home institutions. IASSIST Fellows has provided financial assistance to over 70 conference participants from around the world since 1997. The mission of the IASSIST Early Professional Fellows Program is to provide support for early career data professionals and recognize the value of new and innovative ideas from graduates and professionals new to data in the social sciences, who may not otherwise have the funding to travel. IASSIST is awarding a few full fellowships and a number of partial fellowships. Please be aware that funding is not intended to cover the entire cost of attending the conference. The applicant's home institution must provide some level of financial support to supplement an IASSIST Fellow award. Strong preference will be given to first time participants and applicants from those countries currently with insufficient representation at IASSIST. Only fully completed applications will be considered. Applicants submitting a paper for the conference will be given priority consideration for funding. You may apply for funding via this form . The application deadline is on December 23, 2018. For more information, to apply for funding or nominate a person for a Fellowship, please send an email to the Fellows Committee Chair Florio Arguillas (foa2 at cornell.edu). Events should gather data professionals from multiple institutions and may vary in size and scope from workshops, symposia, conferences, etc. These may be established events or new endeavors. We are particularly looking to sponsor regional or local level events that will attract data professionals who would benefit from IASSIST membership, but may not always be able to travel to attend IASSIST conferences. Preference will be given to events from underrepresented IASSIST membership areas as such as Africa, Asia/Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Latin/South America. Requests for sponsorships may be monetary, and may also include a request for mentorship assistance by matching the event planning committee with an experienced IASSIST member with relevant expertise (e.g., conference planning, subject/content, geographic familiarity). Accepted events will be required to designate an active IASSIST member as the liaison. Generally, this would be an IASSIST member who will be attending the event and although not required, may be on the planning committee or otherwise contributing to the event. The liaison will be responsible for assistance with coordinating logistics related to the sponsorship, ensuring that the sponsorship is recognized at the event, and contributing a post to the IASSIST blog about the event. Proposals should include: - Name of the event and event details (date, location, any other pertinent information) - Organizing or hosting institution - Description of event and how it relates to IASSIST goals and communities - Specific request for sponsorship: amount of money and/or mentorship assistance - For monetary requests, confirmation that an established account exists to receive awarded funds - Description of how the sponsorship will be used - Name and contact information of person submitting proposal and designated event liaison to IASSIST (if different) Proposals are due on Friday, January 18, 2019 via the Application Form . Notification of sponsorship awards will be sent by February 15, 2019. The number and monetary extent of awarded sponsorships will depend on the number and quality of applications received within a total budgeted limit. Individual sponsorship requests may range from $0 USD (request for mentorship only) to $2,000 USD. Message-ID: Do you support faculty researchers or graduate student researchers? Or, do you do your own research? Consider presenting at Empirical Librarians! Please join us for the 5th Empirical Librarians conference, EmpLibs19. EmpLibs19 is a small conference on librarians and research, held March 7-8, 2019 in Richmond, VA. We seek presentation proposals from librarians, library professionals, and LIS students on our two conference topic tracks: (1) supporting original research, through faculty and graduate outreach, scholarly communications, etc.; and (2) doing research in libraries, including qualitative, quantitative, and humanistic approaches. Track 1 concentrates on discussions of the specialized needs of original researchers as patrons. Track 2 concentrates on issues in doing library research, and is also a great place to revisit an already-presented set of findings but focus on the ?how to? of methodology instead of the results. Please submit proposals for concurrent sessions, panels, and/or lightning talks at https://www.lib.utk.edu/emplibs/2019-cfp/ by December 21, 2018. All proposals will be subject to double-blind peer review. Reviewer concerns are typically addressed by revision of the proposed presentation before final acceptance. Presenters will be required to register as attendees; early bird registration (open soon!) will be $45 for all attendees. We are particularly interested in hearing practical ideas for researcher support and concrete discussions of methods for librarian research. Our experience is that the more we learn about doing original research the better we are at supporting original research, and vice versa. For that reason, this conference brings together librarians who are researchers with librarians who support researchers, in order to share all manner of knowledge about research! Empirical Librarians is a small conference focused on librarians doing research and librarians supporting researchers. EmpLibs19 will be a one-and-a-half day conference. The conference will be held at Virginia Commonwealth University campus in Richmond, VA, on Thursday, March 7th, 2019 from 8am-5pm (est.) and Friday, March 8th, 2019 from 8am-1pm. Empirical Librarians is co-sponsored by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Libraries and the Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Share your subject, functional or data expertise, and help extend library curation capacity! Applications are now being accepted to attend the Spring 2019 Specialized Data Curation Workshop, hosted by the Data Curation Network. The next workshop will be held April 17 & 18, 2019 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. This free 2 day training session will bring together library data specialists and discipline/functional experts in a peer-to-peer learning environment for specialized data curation. Attendees will: 1. Increase their understanding of data curation practices and tools in various disciplines, data types, and formats 2. Share expertise and enhance curation capacity for librarians nationwide 3. Meet like-minded colleagues who are interested in building and extending curation practices at their institutions 4. Develop or build upon actionable primers for data curation Who should attend: ? Subject specialists and library staff with functional expertise who have experience working with research data ? Library staff who are tasked with curating research data ? Library staff who have experience in working with research data and are interested in expanding their knowledge of curation practices into new formats or disciplines ? Those interested in sharing their expertise and developing data curation primers. (What's a primer?) Apply now for the spring workshop at JHU! There is no cost for the workshop, but we are limited in the number of attendees we can support. To ensure a good mix of library data staff, subject specialists, and functional experts we've established an application and selection process for the workshops. Application Deadline: January 25, 2019 Acceptance Notification: February 8, 2019 Scholarships are available for participants who would like to attend the workshop but have limited resources. We specifically encourage scholarship applications from students, new professionals, and members of underrepresented groups. Additional information about the scholarships is available on the website. These workshops are made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services RE-85-18-0040-18 and with support from the partner institutions in the Data Curation Network, http://datacurationnetwork.org. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
