In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi Amy, A good basic introduction to many of the topics covered in Research Data Management is provided in these materials: https://educopia.org/research/etdplus which were produced by Educopia in partnership with 12 research libraries that have a data specialization through an IMLS-funded project a year ago. Even though our team produced these with a focus on content produced as part of an ETD, the content covered is inclusive of all research outputs. It is free training, and there are several ways to engage with it, including through those virtual workshops and all of their subcomponents. Michael Boock, Michael Witt, Holly Mercer, Sam Meister, Cal Lee, and others were involved in the creation of this set, including both the recorded workshop components and the full "Toolkit" that we produced to enable librarians to use and adapt the curriculum for their own purposes. All of the material is CC-BY licensed. I hope it's helpful as an option for your student! Hi Amy, A good basic introduction to many of the topics covered in Research Data Management is provided in these materials: https://educopia.org/research/etdplus which were produced by Educopia in partnership with 12 research libraries that have a data specialization through an IMLS-funded project a year ago. Following up on this report, the AAU-APLU is holding a 1.5 day workshop in Washington DC on October 29th and 30th as a venue for "learning, sharing, and planning to support research universities as they implement systems for public access to research data." This workshop is a potential opportunity to influence how high-level administrators understand university responsibilities in making research data publicly accessible and to help define what actions they take to provide support for public access to data. The workshop is an invitation only event and just 30 universities were invited to send a team of representatives to attend. However, librarians will be on some of these teams, giving us a voice at this workshop. As this is an area of interest for data librarians, Sherry Lake and I will be holding an informal online discussion on Tuesday Oct 23rd at 1pm Eastern. We will be discussing issues of interest from the Nov AAU-APLU report and what we as a community would like to see come out of this workshop. If you are interested in attending please send us your email address using this Google Form and we'll send you an invitation to this online discussion a day or two in advance. If there are any particular topics of interest from the AAU-APLU report or if you have ideas on what you would like to see come out of this workshop, please list those as well (optional). We have also created a Google Doc to help start this conversation. If you would like to add your thoughts please do, but do not write over the comments of others or resolve comments. I think our case-study based discussion will complement the webinar by the Education and Resources group one day later nicely. A Tale of Two Data Projects: Curation at the Qualitative Data Repository Researchers are increasingly expected to share data and materials with the scholarly community. While there is a substantial history of sharing quantitative data, scholars are now also becoming more interested in making qualitative data accessible. QDR invites you to a webinar to demonstrate and discuss how curation facilitates the sharing of qualitative data. The webinar tells the story of two data projects deposited with QDR, from the initial contact between depositors and the repository, through a variety of curation steps, to their eventual publication. We highlight details of QDR?s close interaction with researchers during deposit, and discuss how, through the curation process, QDR helps scholars to address the challenges posed by sharing and publishing qualitative data. Data librarians and other data professionals will gain in-depth insight into the curation of qualitative data, the value added by specialized curation, and how libraries can benefit from working with QDR. Presenters: Sebastian Karcher, Associate Director, Qualitative Data Repository Dessi Kirilova, Curation Specialist, Qualitative Data Repository Wednesday, November 7th, at 12pm. Workshops Deadline for submission of ALL proposals: November 1, 2018 Notification of acceptance: Mid-December 2018 The 45th annual conference of the International Association for Social Science Information Services and Technology (IASSIST) will be held in Sydney, Australia from May 27 to 31, 2019. The Program Committee seeks workshops that highlight this year?s theme, Data Down Under: Exploring ?Data Firsts.? We are especially looking for workshops on how to gain skills to become a leader or influencer within your organization (archives, data services, department, university etc.) to positively impact your organizational culture, especially in times of change and restructuring. Successful workshop proposals will blend lecture and active learning techniques. The conference planning committee will provide the necessary classroom space and, depending on need and availability, computing supplies for workshops. Some workshop spaces will rely on participants to supply their own laptop (or tablet if appropriate). Proposals should outline needed computer hardware and software, if any, or specify if participants should bring their own. Typically workshops are half-day with 2-hour and 3-hour options. Workshops will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, May 28 & 29, 2019. Questions about workshop submissions may be sent to the Workshop Coordinators, Eimmy Solis and Stephanie Labou, at workshops at lists.iassistdata.org. Please use this online submission form to submit your workshop proposal. Choose ?Workshop? under Submission Type and make sure to fill out all of the information in the section called Workshops ? Additional Information. -- Allison Gofman Social Science Data Librarian Librarian for Economics, Psychology & Urban and Environmental Planning Tisch Library, Tufts University (617) 627-7124 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Are there adequate numbers of workshop proposals? I have an idea to propose a workshop on mentoring, training, and managing student workers for the next generation of data support professionals... without making that your entire job. I have no idea how popular it would be among iassisters. I don?t mean to be ?special? & outside of your process.. I apologize if that?s what it feels like. All I?m looking for is if you could give me a quick first impression of this as being a good option for your slate or better as a session topic, that?d be super helpful to me. I just don?t have a sense of what?s out there right now. Thank you again, Paula On Fri, Oct 26, 2018 at 10:14 AM Gofman, Allison wrote: > *IASSIST 2019 Call for Proposals ?
