infrastructure. We seek an engaged professional with research experience
who will reach out to faculty and students and work collaboratively to
develop and lead library services in research data management to meet the
needs of the university.



We invite applications for a service-oriented, technically skilled
professional who thrives in a creative, agile work environment. Candidates
for the *Research Data Management Consultant* role should have a strong
understanding of academic research, knowledge of the research life cycle,
and should be highly motivated to develop collaborative relationships both
within the University Libraries and across campus. The consultant role is a
faculty position in the University Libraries and provides services and
support directly to researchers as well as in partnership with library
faculty and staff.



We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the
diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research,
teaching, and service, and have a demonstrated record in working with
international and underrepresented populations.



Under the leadership of the Associate Dean of Innovation, Preservation, and
Access, this position will:

●      Acquire and maintain expertise in information trends within research
data management, digital curation, data science, and related areas.

●      Develop innovative services and resources to support research and
teaching including in the areas of research data management, research tools
and workflows, data sharing, and open science.

●      Track funder and publisher mandates for data management, data
sharing, and open access.

●      In collaboration with the libraries’ liaison librarians, provide
data management and Data Management Plan consultations as well as research
data services more generally.

●      Lead the university’s instance of DMPTool and further develop the
scope of this resource.

●      Develop and implement strategies at the library and university levels
for a sustainable approach to supporting research life cycle management and
public access to products of research including data and software.

●      Teach workshops and trainings on research data management best
practices and digital research tools to both the campus and library communit
ies.

●      As a member of the Research Data Services (RDS) team, jointly
provide expert consultations on topics related to research data and methods
and assist in the support of research tools including Open Science
Framework, Overleaf, Mendeley, figshare, elements, altmetrics, ORCID, and
electronic lab notebooks.

●      Work closely with other members of the RDS Team, which is comprised
of experts in scholarly communication, open science, metadata, digital
curation, data science, and disciplinary research workflows, to build and
support RDM services and infrastructure.

●      Provide input and guidance on research repository workflows and data
policies and assist directly with data deposits in occasional, complex
cases.

●      Partner with liaison librarians to serve the research needs of specific
disciplines.

●      Build relationships and collaborations with other units across the
university who are involved in research, including the Office of the Vice
Provost for Research, Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Research
Integrity and Compliance, Computing Services, Risk Management, the
Institutional Review Board, and the Information Security Office.

●      Communicate with and conduct outreach to faculty and students across
campus to understand their needs, build collaborations, and promote library
services.



*Research Data Management Consultant* is a faculty position under Carnegie
Mellon’s Policy on Librarian and Archivist Appointments. You will be
expected to meet criteria for reappointment and promotion in the areas of
librarianship and archival work; research, scholarly, or artistic
activities; and service to the library, the university, and the profession.

*Qualifications:*

*Required*

●      Ph.D. in a science or social science discipline or a MLS/MLIS from
an ALA-accredited institution
●      Experience conducting academic research in a discipline or field
that is well established at CMU (relevant research experience in industry
or government also considered)

●      Research data management training or experience

●      Awareness of the research funding and scholarly communication
landscapes and their relationship to the research life cycle

●      Ability to provide expert guidance in research data management and
form collaborations to support this component of research projects

●      Basic understanding of programming languages commonly used in
research such as R, Python, javascript, MatLab, or C/C++

●      Ability to work with diverse stakeholders to build programs and
initiatives

●      Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills

●      Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact
with diverse groups including colleagues, faculty, staff, students, and
administrators

●      Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

●      Dedication to professional development including development of a
personal program of research and scholarship

*Preferred*

●      Experience providing research services in an academic library setting

●      Experience managing, analyzing, or working with complex research data

●      Experience with new technologies, tools, and trends in digital
research

●      Knowledge of informatics or data science tools (e.g., Jupyter
Notebook, GitHub, Docker) and methods (e.g., machine learning)

●      Knowledge of technical computing infrastructure

●      Experience using or teaching programming languages commonly used in
research such as R, Python, javascript, MatLab, or C/C++

●      Knowledge of data standards, database structures, metadata
standards, or digital preservation



Preferably, a successful candidate would be in place in early 2019 for the
spring semester.
