*apologies for cross-posting*

Dear colleagues,

Last week at the Library of the VU University in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, we discussed how to change the academic rewards and incentive structure together with a group of four leading Dutch academics, including the President of NWO, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research - the main funding agency in the Netherlands. It was an interesting and lively discussion that is now available as a podcast via https://soundcloud.com/vu-library-live/ep5-rethinking-academic-reward-systems.

Although it focused mainly on what's happening in the Netherlands, it may still be of interest to those outside the Netherlands who are interested in this topic of academic rewards and how to change it to enable open science. In the recording (around 07:09), Prof. Stan Gielen, the President of NWO, says: "I'm now a leader of a European work group to work towards a new system for rewards and recognition of the scientists. So, I will seek agreement between all European funding agencies, including the EU and ERC, to come up with general guidelines about how we should evaluate scientists."

Of particular interest to this group, we discussed how to reward researchers for the investments they make in data collection and data management, and also discussed how to support researchers with data management. At some point during the discussion (at around 41:49 in the recording), Prof. Stan Gielen (President of NWO) says: "We are making a new transition. And we need data stewards,".

I hope you'll find it interesting.

With best wishes,
Maria
