Subnational COVID-19 case counts. The New York Times is conducting ?a round-the-clock effort to tally every known coronavirus case in the United States,? and has begun publishing a dataset of county-level cases and deaths. France publishes spreadsheets of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths by d?partement and sex; on GitHub, there?s an active effort to collect and standardize this dataset and others from France. The German government has a dashboard showing official case counts in each of its Bundesl?nder and Landkreise; software engineer Jan-Philip Gehrcke has been pulling that data into standardized CSV files. Spain publishes daily case, hospitalization, death, and recovery counts for each comunidad aut?noma, as a dashboard with downloadable data; investigative outlet Datadista has been compiling and standardizing that dataset and similar ones. Official coronavirus interventions, continued. The Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker ?aims to track and compare government responses to the coronavirus outbreak worldwide rigorously and consistently.? The project posts daily information concerning 11 kinds of responses, ranging from travel bans to investment in vaccines, and is based on data ?collected from public sources by a team of dozens of Oxford University students and staff from every part of the world.? One of those public sources is UNESCO, which has been tracking countries? school closure policies over time. In the US, the Kaiser Family Foundation is keeping tabs on the current mandates issued by state governors (rather than legislators or local governments). Visa fees. The Global Visa Cost Dataset, published by the European University Institute?s Migration Policy Centre, ?reports the cost [in 2019] of country-to-country visas for tourism, student, business, work, transit, family reunification and other motives worldwide.? The dataset?s authors describe their methodology and findings in a detailed working paper. There is, they write, ?a fundamentally paradoxical situation: The richer a country, the less its citizens pay for visas to go abroad.? iPhone search warrants. In light of ongoing debates over encryption, tech publication Motherboard ?collected and analyzed over 500 iPhone search warrants and related documents filed throughout 2019 to build a database of cases in which law enforcement attempted to get information from an iPhone.? The database, published last month, includes court-docket information, the requesting agency, the suspected crimes, phone models, and more. [h/t Colin Prince] Before Wikipedia. We maintain a lengthy spreadsheet for each department that covers the following: Data Owner, Type of Data, Data Classification Level (confidential, internal or public), Type of Compliance, Data Location, Others with Access, Controls and Processes. We also include potential business impacts that we mark with a simple "x" if applicable: Compliance, Data Leakage, Data Loss/Unavailable, Financial, Legal, Loss of Critical Systems, Reputation Loss and Safety/Security. Each year, we schedule a formal meeting with each head to review and update the previous year's inventory. We then forward the final copy to them for approval following the meeting. We would like to be able to condense things down to where we can possibly send a copy to them for review and updating beforehand. We are trying to revamp (read as "simplify") the process, since it can be daunting and time consuming. In addition to assessing risk and assigning classification levels, the inventories are referred to and updated as employees leave employment or transfer to new positions. Does anyone in this group conduct these types of inventories or do anything somewhat similar? Feedback and ideas for improvements are welcome! Thank you. Message-ID: <9E50B1CB-C536-4763-A1D6-9FDD5E983395@aggies.usu.edu> --- Also posted to Datacure --- Hi all, Our institution will no longer have unlimited storage on Box. When we rolled out Box we touted it as a great solution to back up data (including research data) and now we find that we must look to other solutions that are not as expensive for storing large datasets. We (me, CIO, VPR, library dean) are working on messaging that we?ll send to campus about all of this. It?s complicated by the fact that we will still retain Box ? but only for certain files (like day to day office files) and for those researchers with HIPAA data and a few other exceptions. The CIO wants to see an environment where Box is only used for ?live data? and anything else or any large data that requires back up is moved to another solution. Have any of you been working on this at your campus? Do you have examples of messages you have sent to your faculty and researchers? Would you share with me so our group can look at them? Details and link below- Please join your RDAP colleagues on April 22, 2020 @ 1:00 pm EST for the RDAP Town Hall ?Ask Me Anything? series webinar ?Using APIs for Non-Programmers?. Webinar Description: Application programming interfaces -- "APIs" -- are a key way that systems make functionality and detailed information available. Long available only to software developers, modern APIs are quite accessible to the human user, even those with no programming skills! This webinar will cover: - why you might want to access APIs - how to formulate API requests using a web browser - how to do the same using other freely available tools - how to interpret and work with responses - how to translate API documentation to API requests - examples of APIs drawn from repository, preprint, and identifier systems - next steps to crawling information from APIs The webinar is specifically targeted at those working in libraries and library-like settings, who may want or even need to access APIs, but who have no programming or command line experience. Greg Jan?e is director of the Data Curation Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a certified Carpentry instructor. He's been a researcher and developer in the areas of digital libraries and digital preservation for over twenty years. As a software developer, most recently he was principal developer of the California Digital Library's EZID persistent identifier service; earlier, he was principal developer of UCSB's Alexandria Digital Library, Gazetteer Protocol, and related technologies. Data management and storage issues are interrelated, since poorly managed workspaces with old projects (which could be shared in repositories) and massive undeleted temporary data files quickly become storage issues. It could help with your initial messaging request too because it turns a perceived negative change into an opportunity to clean up and streamline management practices. Just an idea, David On Wed, Apr 22, 2020 at 2:38 PM Betty Rozum > wrote: --- Also posted to Datacure --- Hi all, Our institution will no longer have unlimited storage on Box. Daureen Nesdill ________________________________ From: CODATA-international on behalf of Asha CODATA Sent: Thursday, April 30, 2020 9:08 AM To: codata-international at lists.codata.org Subject: [CODATA-international] Call for sessions, posters and lightning talks: International FAIR Convergence Symposium 2020 [https://codata.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/codata-gofair20symposium-1024x575.png] DEADLINE for session proposals is 20 July 2020. The Symposium will be an innovative mixed virtual and in person event. As travel restrictions are likely to still be in place, the symposium offers virtual participation options for those of the international data community who will not be able to participate in person. The International FAIR Convergence Symposium is organised by CODATA and GO FAIR on 22-23 October 2020 in Paris and virtually. This event will provide a unique forum for advancing international and cross-domain convergence around FAIR. The two internationally recognized organisations will convene a global community with an interest in combining data across domains for a host of research issues ? including major global challenges, such as those relating to the SDGs or the COVID-19 pandemic. Outcomes will directly inform the CODATA Decadal Programme ?Making data work for cross-domain grand challenges? and the GO FAIR community?s convergence towards bottom-up development of the Internet of FAIR data and services globally. The outcomes will address fundamental issues, such as an improved alignment with parallel and emerging data initiatives around the world and lessons learned during the current crisis (virus outbreak) in relation to international research data sharing and the role of FAIR. The approach in many sessions will be detailed and technical, resulting in recommendations, consensus for action and draft implementations. Participation is open to ALL researchers, data experts, funders, and science policy makers. We invite proposals for sessions: https://conference.codata.org/FAIRconvergence2020. The deadline for proposals is 20 July 2020. All topics related to issues, challenges, convergence and consensus-building around FAIR are in scope. Four primary themes are highlighted below. Examples of particular interest are listed under each of the themes, but proposals on other topics relating to the four themes are welcome: 1. CRISIS REDUCTION AND RESPONSE (learning from COVID-19 outbreak) * Virus Outbreak Data Network * COVID-19 initiatives on data exchange * Balancing public good and individual freedom in disaster data * Disaster Risk Reduction * Infectious Disease (including (meta)data collection, description, analysis, modelling, etc.) * Applying lessons from COVID-19 to other hazards 2. FAIR specifications * Semantic interoperability * FAIR vocabularies, FAIR metadata * Certification of FAIR services (repositories, process) * Legal challenges to tackle * Systems analysis * Core tools for cross-domain interoperability * FAIR data objects applications 3. FAIR society * FAIR for SDGs (including contributing to SDG data, scientific analysis of SDGs) * Traditional knowledge, indigenous data and CARE * Use cases of FAIR in business and industry * Ethical dimensions of data, FAIR and open * Smart, resilient and healthy cities * Citizen science and the SDGs * Policy monitoring: transportation, health, planning, and measuring economic impacts 4. Data stewardship: training and career opportunities * Role of data stewardship centres in research institutions * Data stewardship competences, skills and training * Data stewardship career profiles and development * Distributed learning on Federated Data train Session types The sessions will be 90 minutes. For each session there will be the opportunity for virtual, in person and mixed formats. Sessions will have facilitated remote presentations and participation, with technical support and can be broadcast and/or recorded (according to the wishes of participants and organisers). The following parallel session types are suggested by the organisers. * Paper sessions may include research papers, practice papers or a mixture of these. Paper presentations should be a minimum of 15 minutes; papers sessions should include a maximum of 4-5 papers and should leave sufficient time for discussion. * Workshops, interactive practical sessions, structured discussions and/or demos. Different lengths than 90 minutes may be suggested and justified in the session proposal. Session organisers should submit a proposal including a full description of the session. * For a papers session there should be a compelling description of the session theme along with short abstracts of each presentation. * For other session types the proposal should include a compelling description of the session theme, the session format, activity and outcomes, as well as any other information which will allow the proposal to be judged. * It is the responsibility of session organisers to ensure appropriate thematic alignment of the content and invite proposals for papers or practical sessions and workshops to be included in the proposal. The recommended total length of a session proposal is 1000-1200 words and should clearly communicate the vision of the session, its structure and desired objectives. A short bio of all speakers should be submitted together with the session proposal. Proposals for papers sessions should include short abstracts of each paper within this word limit. Posters and Lightning Talks We invite proposals for posters and lightning talks to appear in a dedicated session. Proposals for posters and lightning talks should be no more than 600 words and should address the themes of the symposium listed above. DEADLINE for posters and lightning talks proposals is 21 August 2020. Programme The Symposium programme in virtual and in person format will be announced early in September. It will include keynotes and/or plenary sessions introducing each of the four themes, parallel sessions of various formats (paper sessions, workshops, interactive practical sessions and demos) and a plenary poster session. A plenary panel discussion will close the second day of the Symposium. See also paragraph on session types above.
