As you probably already know, replication studies are pretty important and often overlooked, and this topic is pretty important. Please feel free to distribute this message as you see fit! My colleagues are hoping for a significant sample size. Thanks! Andi Dear Library Faculty and Staff, Researchers at Virginia Tech are conducting a confidential study (IRB #20-027) of workplace experience in US university libraries. To this end, they invite all full-time faculty and staff of the libraries at any US university to fill out this survey. Participation is completely voluntary and you may withdraw your consent by stopping at any time. No directly identifying personal information will be shared with employers or the public. This survey replicates an earlier study of library employees at one university and is part of a larger study funded by the US Department of Defense and administered by the Center for Open Science to improve replicability of social science research. The survey will ask about multiple topics, including your health, workplace conditions, and experience of workplace harassment. If enough employees from your university participate, anonymized results will be provided to your library?s leadership to help improve the experience of you and your colleagues. Combined with results from other universities, it will be used to identify growth opportunities to help library workers feel safe and included. (To protect the identities of participants, we will not provide results to universities affiliated with fewer than 20 respondents and will not release data identifying groups smaller than 10 respondents.) Your decision to participate or not will not be shared with your employers or the public. If you choose to participate, no personally identifying information will be shared with employers or the public. Please find the survey at https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6yAEtRzakC1mxrD. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Principal Investigators, Dr. Nathaniel D. Porter (ndporter at vt.edu), C. Cozette Comer ( cozette at vt.edu) or Virginia Tech's Institutional Review Board (irb at vt.edu). Sincerely, Dr. Nathaniel D. Porter & C. Cozette Comer -- Andrea L. The Midwest Data Librarian Symposium (MDLS) is an unconference for data and librarians. MDLS is intended to enable Midwestern librarians who work with research data management issues the chance to network; however, it is open to all who wish to attend, including data professionals and those situated outside the Midwest. MLDS 2020 will be a virtual event taking place over three afternoons. Given community feedback on the virtual nature of this year's symposium, MDLS will look a bit more like a traditional conference, but will still deliver plenty of networking time and engaging content. The planning committee seeks submissions for presentations for session panels and lightning talks. We encourage presenters from any roles that support research data to apply. The planning committee also seeks community volunteers to serve as mentors, facilitators, and note-takers. Proposals are due by 5 pm CST on July 10, 2020. To submit a proposal: MDLS 2020 CFP Google form Expectations Session panels: Presenters will give a 15-minute presentation related to the panel theme, time for questions will be included at the end of the panel. Lightning talks: Presenters will give a 5-minute presentation related to the lightning talk theme, time for questions will be included at the end of the talks. Proposals should: * Explore practical problems, advice, and experiences of data librarian work * Be based on practical learning outcomes for both new and advanced professionals * Provide clear take-aways for the audience * Preference will be given to Midwestern institutions, early-career professionals, professionals from diverse backgrounds, and topics that address issues of diversity in the field. Successful applications will: * Clearly articulate their topic, take-aways, and learning outcomes. * Promote an accessible and inclusive experience. Panel Topics Data Librarianship in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences * Case studies and practical applications of data librarianship in the arts, humanities, and social sciences - developing partnerships, services for these disciplines, and data concerns specific to these communities. Ethics * In data sharing, building data collections, biases in data, data invisibility, supporting data work with diverse communities, ethical data visualization and communication, how we guide practitioners to make good ethical decisions, providing resources and educational opportunities, and working with sensitive data in a way that supports researchers and respects human subjects and communities. Infrastructure * Infrastructure is critical to scalable services, so let's talk about different frameworks and experiments in infrastructure. * Please consider this broadly - across partnerships/collaborations, physical infrastructures, staff resources, and supporting research services across diverse campus groups and communities. Lightning talks Research and Service Continuity during COVID-19 * Share your experiences and lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. o How do you support service/research continuity while working remotely? o What gaps in services, infrastructure, or community support have been illuminated? o What new services or modes of delivery might we explore? Learning from Our Mistakes 2.0 * It's 2020 and as many conferences have said, hindsight is 20/20! o What have we learned in the last 5 years of MDLS? o Where did we start and where are we now? * Let's celebrate successes, learn from all our experiments and pilots, and generally share how awesome we've all been the last five years! Volunteers * Mentor session for early-career data librarians (Call for mentors) o Given that we pulled back to a more traditional conference format due to our virtual environment, we wanted to be sure to build in networking and community time. o We're looking for seasoned data librarians/information professionals to commit to meeting with 2-3 mentees for a 1-hour meeting/lunch during the conference. We'll connect you based on interests/regions and some conversation starters. Your task will be to listen to questions/concerns and provide practical insight to our early-career colleagues and students. o Depending on response levels, we will do our best to include everyone, but may not be able to. * Future of MDLS community (Call for facilitators and note takers) o We're hoping to have a discussion about infrastructure and futures for MDLS to gain community insight and direction. o We are looking for folks willing to help facilitate break-out rooms as well as note-takers. * Social activities o If you would like to lead a topic table, hackathon, virtual lunch/happy hour, or game night session, please provide your name and activity/topic. o Social activities are planned during lunch from 12:00-1:00 PM each conference day, as well as the last portion of the third conference day. As William Deming said, ?without data, you?re just another person with an opinion.? So the argument in a research article must have some sort of evidence, i.e. data, behind it. But does the data support the article or does the article support the data? Both actually. It is the responsibility of the researcher to provide a *package* of evidence and argument in order to advance our understanding. This presentation will introduce ways to interconnect your article and data in ways that make them most readily understood and useful by others. Topics include how to prepare data for presentation, how to ensure the data are well stewarded, and how to provide fair credit and access to data through citation. It will also touch briefly on other research outputs like software and protocols. *Name of the Speaker:* Mark A. ORSC manages the annual Open Repositories conference and consists of a maximum of 12 standing members (who serve three-year terms) as well as the chairs of the host and program committees for the annual conferences. We have three open slots for standing members, and we are inviting nominations, including self-nominations. The nomination deadline is July 24th 2020. The nomination form is available here: https://forms.gle/F6hQhd6wM7kjf7QbA Nominees should have participated in at least one previous OR conference, ideally have been a member of a program or host committee for an OR conference, and have extensive experience with repositories and the international repository community. Some type of experience with the Open Repositories conference is necessary to join the ORSC. ORSC members are expected to take part in a range of activities throughout the year, as well as those specifically related to the conference. Examples of member activities include: * Regular attendance at OR if at all possible. We note that for some potential members this can be difficult due to cost, travel, and schedules; the OR SC cannot provide funding for members to attend. * Participating in the majority of the monthly committee meetings, including the in-person meeting that takes place at the conference every year. * Participation in ad hoc or standing committees (e.g. Scholarship, Code of Conduct, Finance, etc.). * Serving specific conference roles such as Program Chair or Poster Chair. * Reflecting OR news and announcements (e.g. Calls for Papers, Expressions of Interest) via mailing lists and through social media. * Timely participation in all discussions, in-person and online. * Reviewing conference proposals and submissions. * Reviewing conference host bids. * Selecting new standing members for the ORSC. We strongly recommend that potential nominees refer to the conference handbook for more information about the role of the ORSC: https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/or11/Open+Repositories+Conference+Handbook. When submitting a nomination (and self-nominations are welcome) you will be asked to submit the following information: * Personal information: name, email, institution affiliation, and a brief description of the nominee?s role. * An indication that your nominee has attended at least one OR in the previous four years. * Statement of interest, e.g. why the nominee wants to join the Steering Committee. * Statement of qualifications, e.g. what specific experiences the nominee would bring to the Steering Committee. The OR Steering Committee will elect new members in August. Successful new members will be expected to join the ORSC in September for a three-year period. It then provides a process map and detailed guidance to help you produce your own born-digital workflow documentation in both visual and descriptive formats. Finally, the *Guide *provides a set of use cases for this visual and descriptive documentation, illustrating with case studies and examples how you can use it to help your institution improve its born-digital archiving practices over time. To supplement the *Guide *and increase its usability, Educopia Institute has also released three video learning modules. Each module maps to a section of the *Guide *and provides high-level guidance on how to create and use born-digital workflow documentation. The modules were created and recorded by Hannah Wang and Colin Post. *If you are interested in learning more about the OSSArcFlow project, the Guide, or the training modules,** please register for this webinar* * taking place on July 14 at 11 am ET/10 am CT/8 am PT.* The webinar will bring together OSSArcFlow partners, Educopia staff, and authors of the *Guide *and training modules to discuss lessons learned from the project and future directions for born-digital archival workflows. We hope to see you there! Message-ID: ? Do you want to keep the registration cost for RDAP 2021 low? ???? Are you good at asking people for money? ? Do you like sending emails and checking off tasks on a to-do list? ? Committee work involves attending online/virtual meetings, sending emails, and tracking progress. The workload is light but requires good communication coordination. As RDAP 2021 will be a virtual event the committee will also need to get creative in how to recruit and connect with sponsors. This committee's work is essential to RDAP and we?d like to add at least 2 new members.
