<strong><font size="4">The Quarterly Report from Fedora</font></strong></a><br>December 2013<br><br></font><div><font face="arial, helvetica, sans-serif" color="#000000"><strong>Fedora Development</strong> - In the past quarter, the development team released two Alpha releases of Fedora 4; detailed release notes are here:<br>
<br>• <a href="https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/FF/Fedora+4.0+Alpha+2+Release+Notes" target="_blank" style="text-decoration:none">Fedora 4 Alpha 2 Release</a><br>• <a href="https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/FF/Fedora+4.0+Alpha+3+Release+Notes" target="_blank" style="text-decoration:none">Fedora 4 Alpha 3 Release</a><br>
<br>These two releases represent incremental, yet significant steps towards the production Fedora 4.0. Features of note include an Authorization framework, Policy-driven storage, support for advanced Search and Triplestore indexes, Large files, Transactions, and Versioning to name a few. Considerable effort has also been put towards the creation of user documentation and a simplified means of deploying Fedora 4. All said, Fedora 4 is now encouraging the community to download, install, and give the new feature-set a try.<br>
<br><strong>Fundraising</strong> - As of December 2013, contributions to DuraSpace earmarked for Fedora total $413,833, a 139% increase over last year's total of $173,000. A total of forty sponsors have contributed, with eleven new sponsors, fifteen sponsors who have upgraded their investment, three non-renewals and two sponsor downgrades. While excellent progress has been made in the past year, the project is still short of its goal of reaching the $500,000 annual support level.<br>
<br><strong>New Web Site</strong> - <a href="http://fedorarepository.org/" target="_blank" style="text-decoration:none">http://fedorarepository.org</a> - Based on input from the Fedora community, DuraSpace staff have redesigned the Fedora web site. The web site and wiki provide the latest updates about Fedora development, highlight use case profiles and community engagement, provide updates on past and upcoming meetings, and includes a variety of resources for the Fedora community. Web site users may now view and sort repositories by repository technology type and find out where they are located (<a href="http://registry.duraspace.org/registry/fedora" target="_blank" style="text-decoration:none">http://registry.duraspace.org/registry/fedora</a>). The Fedora Steering Group welcomes suggestions and feedback as we continue to improve communications and outreach about Fedora.<br>
<br><strong>Staffing</strong> - The Fedora Project continues to ramp up staffing and support in order to meet the many goals of the project. Over the past quarter, Andrew Woods provided invaluable support as full-time tech lead, coordinating the efforts of (12) developers at (10) different institutions. Many thanks go to Michele Kimpton, Jonathan Markow, Valorie Hollister, Carol Minton Morris and the rest of the DuraSpace team for coordinating the sponsorship campaign, budget planning, several conferences, hack fests, and the new web site redesign. The Fedora Steering Group is currently in the process of interviewing for the dedicated Fedora product manager, expected to be hired in the first quarter of 2014. Working closely with the Fedora Steering Group, Advisory Group, developers and Fedora community, the product manager [1] will help set the vision and long-term roadmap for the product, raise annual funding levels to meet project goals, and be an effective spokesperson for the project.<br>
<br><strong>Community Engagement and Outreach</strong> - In the past quarter, developers have continued to hold daily meetings in conjunction with development sprints, as well as an "install fest" and week-long hack fest in Austin at the DLF conference. Two Fedora Advisory Group meetings were held, one immediately after DLF in Austin, and one immediately after CNI in Washington, D.C., along with multiple Advisory Group conference calls. In addition to the web set redesign, mailing lists have been created to merge past community discussions with current work.<br>
<br><strong>Upcoming Conferences</strong> - Fedora presentations and meetings will occur at HydraConnect (San Diego, CA) in January, IDCC (San Francisco, CA) in February, Code4Lib (Raleigh, NC), RDA (Dublin, Ireland), Fedora DC Users Group meeting (Washington, D.C.), and the DuraSpace Sponsors Summit (Washington, D.C.) all in March.<br>
<br>[1] In late January the DuraSpace organization <a href="http://duraspace.org/david-wilcox-new-fedora-product-manager-duraspace-team" target="_blank" style="text-decoration:none">announced</a> that David Wilcox accepted a position with DuraSpace as the product manager for the Fedora project effective February 17, 2014. In his role as product manager for Fedora David will be working closely with the community and steering group to set the vision and long term roadmap for Fedora. David joins Fedora technical director Andrew Woods as dedicated Fedora project staff.</font></div>
